The 2011 Rugby World Cup saw the Springboks drawn in a tough Pool D alongside Wales, Fiji, Samoa, and Namibia. South Africa topped the pool with four strong wins - including a tense 17–16 victory over Wales in Wellington. In the quarterfinal, they faced Australia in a bruising battle in Wellington, narrowly losing 11–9 in one of the most hotly contested matches of the tournament.
